A Rechargeable Hybrid Van to Travel the World!

Hybrid minivans are not exactly flooding the market, but Toyota is taking a big step forward by launching the 2021 redesigned and vastly improved Sienna.

“It’s an all-new vehicle from start to finish, with a new structural platform as well as a new electric platform”, says Chief Engineer Monte Kaehr. “The development of the fourth-generation Sienna was a huge challenge, but we were all united around a common goal: to make the best van ever.”

The design of the front end of the 2021 Sienna was inspired by Japan’s iconic Shinkansen high-speed train to give it not only a sleek and elegant appearance, but also a sense of speed and confidence. The headlights are mounted high and extend to the sides as if they were shaped by the wind. The bold lower grille is highlighted by thin, high-tech LED fog lights that are pushed to the corners, significantly enhancing the vehicle’s stable, well-cambered stance.

In an effort to optimize interior space while avoiding a square design, the rear of the cabin now features a dynamically forward sloping pillar. The taillights extend harmoniously from the sculpted bodywork towards the rear and use thin strips of LED lighting to create a unique light signature. The integrated black tail light bezel is not only an aesthetic touch, it also contributes to improved aerodynamic performance. The deeply sculpted and sleek-looking tailgate features an integrated spoiler, made possible by a moulded resin process. Furthermore, thanks to the new TNGA-K platform, the new minivan benefits from a multitude of measures designed to make the passenger compartment almost as quiet and peaceful as a library.

Under the hood, the driver of the 2021 Sienna may not even notice this new model’s most important technological innovation: the hybrid powertrain. And that’s exactly what the engineers intended. Toyota’s Hybrid Drive System II delivers a total of 243 horsepower combined with a combined fuel consumption estimated by the manufacturer at 7.1 L/100 km, a benchmark for the segment, while operating seamlessly. In addition, the 2021 new Sienna offers several driving modes (EV, NORMAL, ECO and SPORT) that allow the driver to customize its character. The NORMAL mode is ideal for everyday driving. SPORT mode increases available power for improved acceleration. ECO mode optimizes fuel and battery efficiency. Finally, EV mode allows you to drive short distances at low speeds in all-electric mode.

Sienna LE and XLE are available in an 8-passenger configuration with two captain’s seats, a long-sliding second row and a fold-down centre seat. XLE, XSE, Limited and Platinum are 7-passenger models with super-long sliding second row captain’s seats, while Limited and Platinum FWD models are equipped with additional leg rests. With smart solutions and first-class comfort throughout the cabin, the 2021 new Sienna is the most sophisticated, versatile and comfortable Toyota vehicle ever designed for North America.
